HIGHLIGHTS OF 2009

  • Published a "Forum" piece in
    the Record-Eagle supporting the
    investigative role of newspapers,
    especially the Record-Eagle
  • Saw 80% of LIWDA's Local
    Action Group members
    become part of various county
    boards and commissions,
    including the Solid Waste
    Council, the Leelanau
    Conservancy, Leelanau Clean
    Water, the Heritage Route
    Committee, and the Alternative
    Energy groups in Northport and
    Empire.  Their presence
    furthered achievement of
    LIWDA's environmental goals
  • Celebrated the institution of
recusal laws (a 2008 goal) for
    the Michigan Supreme Court;
laws that are the strictest in the
    nation
  • Held "Leading Ladies," a
    successful women's leadership
    workshop
  • Participated in a broad-based
    action team that lobbied
    lawmakers and the White House
    to pass a comprehensive health
    care reform bill
GOALS FOR 2010

  • Support LIWDA-endorsed
    candidates and issues through
    petitions, phone calls, emails,
    letters to editors and rallies
  • Raise public awareness of the
    need for election reform in
    Michigan, especially the
    importance of transparency and
    disclosure of campaign donors
    by holding a public forum
  • Investigate the possibility of
    establishing a Women's
    Coalition that would speak out
    on common issues and increase
    the influence of women on
    government policy at all levels
  • Initiate a process whereby
members will be able to more
    easily manage and take
    personal action on issues that
have been forwarded as well as
    LIWDA-endorsed issues
